Not too far away from the old city of Kampen, we found a very nice place for our first event. The old steam-powered Pumping Station 'Broeken en Maten', named after the nearby polders, opens its door to welcome us.
Why Kamper Uiensoep, which stands for Kamper Onion Soup?
Well, in the old days, the population of Kampen, was not, ehm, too bright because of a number of things. Well known are the stories, known to us as 'Kamper Uien' (Kampen's Onions).
One of the most well known stories is the hoisting of a cow to the top of the New Tower. Grass was growing on top and people spoke shame of it.
After several meetings in the Cityhall it was decided one of the best cows should do the job.
A rope was put around the neck and after a while people shouted: 'She probably want the fresh grass very badly, because her tongue is hanging out of her mouth!'
Ofcourse, numerous other stories exist.
We are well aware of the stupidities and use the ONIONS with pride!
